Choice

Where to from here, as life presents options?
There was a common expression in New Zealand, “choice.”  It is interchangeable with the expression, “Chur.”
The meaning is obscure.

The artwork is a very simple abstract, comprising a red “base-line” strip, composed with white and red in Jackson Pollock style paint splattering and trickle.  The rest of the canvas is activated with texture & rubbed down to a brown.  The simplicity in horizontality is broken by a vertical “slice” cut through the image toward the right of centre.  Also intruding into the red baseline is an added smaller canvas toward left of centre.  This smaller canvas is textured and trickled.  The majority of the canvas is covered in gold foil, broken and fretted.
The trickle that splashes across this smaller canvas can arguably be seen to be the focal point and central story told by this artwork.  It represents a whimsical line, maybe even a signature.  A little dancing line, hovvering, bouncing.  Uncertain.  Hesitantly happy.
If it pleases the viewer to consider mathematical lines, such as distributions, or perhaps static indicators.  This artwork might also show how an individual’s voice is almost drowned out by the baseline of the rest of the world.  But the individual voice is still to be heard.

size: 40inches square; mixed media on canvas; one small canvas set on top of the larger one.  Painted around 2010.
